AMD and Sony Interactive Entertainment have outlined their joint vision for the future of gaming hardware, offering a first look at technologies expected to underpin the next generation of consoles.

The project, titled From Project Amethyst to the Future of Play, describes three core design pillars for upcoming hardware platforms: performance, immersion and efficiency.

AMD’s Jack Huynh, SVP and GM, Computing and Graphics Group and Mark Cerny, lead architect of PS5 and PS5 Pro, discuss the latest developments from Project Amethyst

Performance Gains Through Neural Arrays

AMD disclosed that its forthcoming architectures will feature new Neural Arrays, aimed at handling larger machine learning workloads and supporting neural rendering. The company said this design approach is intended to free up computing resources and optimise performance for advanced gaming experiences.

A Sony spokesperson said the collaboration with AMD reflects the shared goal of pushing console hardware forward.

“Gaming hardware today is about balancing raw performance with smarter workload handling. Our joint effort with AMD allows us to explore how emerging compute models can serve developers and players alike,” a spokesperson said.

Visual Immersion With Radiance Cores

Another technology previewed was Radiance Cores, designed to take over some rendering tasks from traditional shader cores. By offloading parts of the visual workload, AMD said Radiance Cores can improve frame rates and visual detail, helping achieve more immersive environments.

Developers are expected to benefit by being able to allocate shader resources more efficiently across complex gaming scenes.

Efficiency Through Universal Compression

The companies also discussed Universal Compression, a technique aimed at improving both storage and memory utilisation. AMD said this approach could enable higher performance while reducing power consumption, supporting more efficient game delivery at scale.

Shared Vision For The Next Generation

While AMD provided the technical details, Sony framed the developments in the context of its wider console strategy.

“We see these advances as central to the way players will experience games in the next generation. Efficiency, performance and immersion are not separate goals but part of a single design philosophy,” Sony’s spokesperson said.

Industry Context

The AMD-Sony collaboration builds on a long history of joint development, with AMD supplying the CPU and GPU technology for multiple generations of PlayStation consoles.

Analysts expect that neural rendering, improved frame rates and new compression methods will play an increasing role as developers push against the hardware limits of current platforms.

AMD noted that these technologies are still subject to refinement and that supported features may vary by operating system or platform integration. The company also said certain functions may require third-party enablement.

Looking Ahead

Neither AMD nor Sony confirmed timelines for when the new hardware will reach consumers, though they suggested that the underlying technologies are being built with long-term deployment in mind.

Both companies framed the initiative as a continuation of their partnership, with AMD providing the silicon foundation and Sony focusing on developer enablement and end-user experience.

The full preview positioned Project Amethyst as a bridge to future platforms, suggesting that the combination of neural arrays, radiance cores and universal compression could form the backbone of the next major console release.
