Surprisingly Useful AI Article Enhancements
AMD and OpenAI have signed a long-term partnership that will see the deployment of up to 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPUs to support the research group’s expanding Ai infrastructure.
The agreement, announced on Monday in Santa Clara, outlines a staged rollout beginning with 1 gigawatt of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs scheduled for the second half of 2026.
Expanding Infrastructure At Scale
The deal positions AMD as a central compute partner for OpenAI. Both firms said they will work together to align hardware and software roadmaps, with AMD providing rack-scale Ai systems and future Instinct GPU generations.
AMD has been building its data centre footprint through earlier MI300X and MI350X deployments. The latest agreement extends that collaboration into the next phase.
Dr Lisa Su, Chair and Chief Executive of AMD, said the partnership highlights a shared objective.
“We are thrilled to partner with OpenAI to deliver Ai compute at massive scale,” she said. “This partnership brings the best of AMD and OpenAI together to create a true win-win enabling large-scale Ai buildout and advancing the ecosystem.”
Financial And Strategic Alignment
To further align incentives, AMD has issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of its common stock. Vesting is linked to deployment milestones and AMD’s share price targets, as well as OpenAI achieving commercial and technical progress required to support large-scale rollouts.
The first tranche will vest with the initial 1 gigawatt deployment, with further tranches unlocked as capacity expands to 6 gigawatts.
Jean Hu, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of AMD, said the agreement is expected to generate significant returns. “Our partnership with OpenAI is expected to deliver tens of billions of dollars in revenue for AMD while accelerating OpenAI’s Ai infrastructure buildout,” Hu said. “This agreement creates strategic alignment and shareholder value for both AMD and OpenAI and is expected to be highly accretive to AMD’s non-GAAP earnings-per-share.”
OpenAI’s View On Capacity
OpenAI executives said the collaboration will help provide the compute resources needed to continue building advanced models and Ai tools.
Sam Altman, Co-founder and Chief Executive of OpenAI, described the deal as an important step. “This partnership is a major step in building the compute capacity needed to realise Ai’s potential,” Altman said. “AMD’s leadership in high-performance chips will enable us to accelerate progress and bring the benefits of advanced Ai to everyone faster.”
Greg Brockman, Co-founder and President of OpenAI, pointed to the need for integration across technology layers. “Building the future of Ai requires deep collaboration across every layer of the stack,” he said. “Working alongside AMD will allow us to scale to deliver Ai tools that benefit people everywhere.”
Looking Ahead
The two firms said their partnership will deliver infrastructure designed to meet rising global demand for Ai workloads. By combining AMD’s hardware expertise with OpenAI’s software development, they expect to accelerate the pace of high-performance computing innovation.
