Surprisingly Useful AI Article Enhancements
Alipay has reported that its AI Pay solution exceeded 120 million transactions over the past week. The milestone marks a significant shift in how consumers in China interact with AI agents to complete financial transactions.
The service allows users to authorise payments through AI agents across various platforms and hardware. It is currently the first payment service of its kind to reach this volume of usage.
Alipay Head of AI Payment Innovation, Chen Gang, said the growth reflects a change in consumer behaviour.
“Users are increasingly looking for ways to complete tasks without switching between multiple applications,” Chen said.
“By integrating payment capabilities directly into AI agents, we are reducing the friction traditionally associated with digital commerce.”
Integration Across Retail And Hardware
Since its launch in 2025, the system has been integrated into several high-traffic environments. This includes mini programs for retailers such as Luckin Coffee and AI smart glasses developed by Asus and Rokid.
In December 2025, Alipay partnered with Rokid to allow developers to build payment features into agents on the Lingzhu platform. The integration uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which allows developers to implement payment functions using natural language commands.
Rokid Chief Executive, Misa Zhu, said the goal was to make transactions more intuitive for wearable device users.
“The ability to pay using voice commands while wearing smart glasses changes the utility of the hardware,” Zhu said.
“It moves the device from being a secondary screen to a primary tool for commerce.”
Trust Protocols And Instant Commerce
The surge in volume follows the January 2026 launch of the Agentic Commerce Trust Protocol. The protocol was developed alongside partners including Taobao Instant Commerce and the Qwen App from Alibaba.
The Qwen App was the first to adopt the standards, allowing users to order food and beverages through a chat interface. The system handles the logistics of the order and the final transaction through Alipay AI Pay.
Industry analysts suggest this model of agentic commerce represents the next stage of eCommerce evolution in the region.
Contactless Growth Alongside AI
While AI-driven payments are rising, Alipay also reported high engagement with its physical contactless solution, Alipay Tap!.
In January 2026, daily transactions via the tap-based system exceeded 100 million. The technology allows users to unlock their phone and tap a merchant terminal or tag without opening an app.

Alipay Vice President of Payment Services, Li Jingsheng, said the simplified interface has seen broad adoption.
“We are seeing strong pickup from younger demographics and older adults who find the tap gesture easier than navigating menus,” Li said.
The service is also compatible with international debit and credit cards, allowing visitors to China to pay using the same infrastructure as local residents.
Expanding Into Wearables
The payment provider is currently working with hardware manufacturers including Xiaomi, Rokid and RayNeo to embed these features into wearable tech.
On certain models of AI smart glasses, users can look at a blue Alipay Tap! ring and trigger a payment with a voice command. The transaction is then confirmed hands-free.
To date, more than 200 million consumers have used the tap-based system for tasks such as unlocking shared bikes, restaurant ordering and processing tax refunds.
The company expects the number of transactions involving autonomous agents to continue climbing as more retailers adopt the Agentic Commerce Trust Protocol.
