Adobe Brings Turntable To Illustrator

Surprisingly Useful AI Article Enhancements

Adobe has made its Turntable feature generally available in Adobe Illustrator, giving designers and animators the ability to generate multi-angle views from a single vector illustration without manual redraws.

The AI-powered tool, which runs on Adobe Firefly, was first previewed as a “MAX Sneak” at the Adobe MAX conference in October 2024. It entered public beta in mid-2025 before arriving in the production release of Illustrator today.

Turntable takes a 2D vector object and automatically generates up to 74 editable views from a single design, including full rotation around the vertical axis and vertical tilt. Each generated angle remains a fully editable vector, preserving the original details, colours and structure of the artwork.

From Hours Of Redraws To Seconds

The feature is aimed squarely at a long-standing pain point for vector artists. Creating character turnarounds or multi-angle views of illustrations has traditionally required designers to manually redraw their work from each new perspective – a process that can consume hours of repetitive labour.

Deepa Subramaniam, Vice President of Product Marketing for Creative Professionals at Adobe, pointed to the origin of the project.

“The idea for Turntable originated from a consistent theme we heard directly from customers around the time and effort required to manually redraw characters and illustrations from multiple angles, often taking hours,” Subramaniam explained.

With Turntable, designers can select an object, generate the views and then extract the angles they need for further editing or export. The tool includes a slider-based control bar that allows users to rotate the object sideways up to 180 degrees in either direction, with additional controls to tilt the artwork 30 degrees up or down.

“What once took hours now happens in seconds, making it easier for designers and animators to turn static artwork into dynamic visuals,” Subramaniam wrote in a blog post accompanying the announcement.

Practical Applications Across Creative Teams

Adobe has outlined several use cases that have emerged during Turntable’s beta period.

Animation teams can use the tool to generate character turnarounds for pitch decks without having to manually draw each angle. Game designers can produce 360-degree concept art assets from a single illustration. Social media teams can create GIFs and micro-animations within Illustrator, rather than switching to dedicated motion tools.

The feature also integrates with Adobe After Effects, allowing teams to hand off multi-angle assets directly into motion workflows. Adobe has framed this as part of a broader effort to reduce friction between its design and motion applications.

Seven Months Of Beta Testing

Turntable spent roughly seven months in public beta, during which Adobe collected feedback from the creative community to refine the tool. The beta period surfaced issues around layer management when both the beta and standard versions of Illustrator were installed on the same machine, according to Adobe community forum posts.

The company indicated that the production release has addressed these issues, though the underlying technology remains complex. Adobe’s own beta documentation acknowledged that users should “expect rough edges here and there” during the testing phase.

The general availability release supports both vector and raster objects, and outputs can be exported as GIF files for use in other applications.

Part Of A Broader AI Push In Illustrator

Turntable arrives as part of a wider set of updates to Illustrator that lean heavily on generative AI capabilities powered by Adobe Firefly.

Generative Shape Fill, another AI-driven feature, allows users to fill shapes with detailed, editable vector graphics based on text prompts. The tool supports multiple AI models, including Adobe’s own Firefly Vector model and third-party partner models.

Generative Expand enables designers to extend the dimensions of vector artwork and automatically generate content to fill bleed areas, while maintaining the visual style of the original piece.

The latest Illustrator release also introduces an Auto Select feature that generates up to four variations from a single prompt, and adds support for Style Reference across partner AI models including GPT Image and Gemini.

All generative AI features in Illustrator can now be accessed from a centralised Generative AI button in the toolbar or through the Object menu.

Performance And Workflow Updates

Beyond the AI features, Adobe has rolled out a number of performance and workflow improvements in the latest Illustrator release.

The update includes a redesigned font browser with streamlined sections and new filters, improved gradient rendering with dithering and perceptual blending, and enhanced snapping tools. Calligraphic and Art Brushes now render effects faster, and operations such as move, scale, rotate and duplication have been optimised for smoother performance.

A new Projects feature allows users to create shared spaces for collaboration across Adobe applications including Photoshop and Adobe Express. Files can also now be exported directly to Adobe cloud storage from the Export for Screens panel.

A Measured Reception

Industry reaction to Turntable has been broadly positive, though some observers have noted that the feature raises familiar questions about the role of generative AI in creative workflows.

The tool is positioned as an assistive feature rather than a replacement for manual illustration work. Each generated view remains editable, meaning designers retain control over the output and can adjust or refine individual angles as needed.

For studios and freelancers working with character design, product visualisation or motion graphics, the practical benefit is a reduction in the repetitive work required to produce multi-angle assets – a task that has long been one of the more time-consuming aspects of vector illustration.

Turntable is available now to all Adobe Illustrator subscribers through the latest Creative Cloud desktop update.
