Acer Enters Handheld Gaming Market With Intel-Powered Predator Atlas 8

Acer has unveiled the Predator Atlas 8 (PA08-I51), an 8-inch Windows 11 gaming handheld powered by Intel’s new Arc G-Series processors. The device marks Acer’s entry into the handheld PC gaming segment, bringing features from its Predator gaming laptop lineup into a portable form factor that weighs under 810 grams.

The Predator Atlas 8 will be available in Australia from late Q3 or early Q4 2026. Australian pricing has not yet been confirmed.

Intel Arc G-Series At The Core

The Predator Atlas 8 runs on Intel’s new Arc G3 Extreme processor with up to Intel Arc B390 integrated graphics. The graphics hardware includes support for ray tracing and Intel XeSS 3, an AI-powered upscaling technology designed to maintain higher frame rates during GPU-intensive workloads by rendering at a lower resolution and using AI to reconstruct the image.

Intel’s XeSS 3 technology is aimed at addressing one of the core challenges for handheld gaming devices: delivering visual quality that approaches desktop standards while operating within the thermal and power constraints of a battery-powered device.

The handheld supports up to 24GB of LPDDR5x memory running at 7,467 MT/s and up to 1TB of PCIe Gen4 NVMe storage via a single M.2 2280 SSD slot. A UHS-II microSD card slot provides additional storage expansion.

Jim Johnson, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Client Computing Group at Intel, outlined the thinking behind the platform.

“Handheld gamers want PC-class performance without being tied to a desktop or charger,” Johnson explained. “With Intel Arc G-Series processors and Acer’s Predator Atlas 8, we deliver smooth gameplay with exceptional battery life in a form factor you can take anywhere.”

“By combining console-like accessibility with technologies like AI-powered XeSS 3 upscaling, we maximise performance and efficiency on the go.”

Metal Fan Cooling In A Handheld

Acer has adapted its Predator AeroBlade cooling system from its gaming laptops for use in the Atlas 8. The handheld uses a dual-fan setup that includes what Acer describes as the first metal fan in a handheld gaming device.

The precision metal AeroBlade fan features 89 blades at 0.1mm thickness, delivering up to a 10 per cent increase in airflow compared to a plastic fan of equivalent size, based on Acer’s internal testing. A second plastic fan works alongside the metal unit, and the system uses Vortex Flow tuning, which employs angled internal channels to direct hot air out of the chassis more efficiently as performance demands increase.

Thermal management is a critical differentiator in handheld gaming hardware, where sustained performance under load depends on the cooling system’s ability to dissipate heat within a compact enclosure. The metal fan approach is intended to give Acer an advantage in maintaining clock speeds during extended gaming sessions.

Display And Audio

The Predator Atlas 8 features an 8-inch WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) IPS-level touchscreen with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a 120 Hz refresh rate. The display reaches 500 nits of peak brightness and supports variable refresh rate technology, which matches the screen’s refresh rate to the GPU’s output frame rate to reduce stuttering and tearing.

The panel covers 100 per cent of the sRGB colour space and 77.68 per cent of the Adobe RGB gamut. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus with DXC, which provides scratch resistance and reduces glare. Ten-point multi-touch input is supported across the full display surface.

Audio is handled by dual 2-watt speakers with DTS:X Ultra spatial audio processing. Dual microphones with Acer PurifiedVoice AI-assisted noise reduction are included for voice chat during online play.

Controls And Input

The control layout includes ABXY buttons, a D-Pad, full-size left and right analog sticks and Hall-effect analog triggers. The triggers feature a dual-mode design with a physical switch that lets users toggle between two response profiles: a micro-switch mode for instant-click input in first-person shooters and a Hall-effect analog mode with variable pressure sensitivity for racing games and flight simulators.

Additional inputs include left and right bumpers, macro buttons, a volume rocker and a power button with an integrated fingerprint sensor. Dedicated buttons for the XBox Game Bar widget and PredatorSense provide quick access to system tools and performance settings.

PredatorSense, the system management app that has been a feature of Acer’s Predator gaming laptops, is available on a handheld for the first time with the Atlas 8. It provides live system monitoring, performance mode selection, RGB lighting customisation and access to gameplay settings.

Battery And Connectivity

The Predator Atlas 8 carries an 80 Wh battery, which is large for the handheld gaming category. Intel Endurance Gaming technology is designed to balance frame rate and power draw to extend session length without requiring users to manually reduce settings.

The device charges via a 65-watt USB Type-C power adapter and includes dual Thunderbolt 4 ports for docking, display output and accessory connections. Wireless connectivity is provided by Intel Killer Wi-Fi 7 BE1775s and Bluetooth 5.4.

Windows 11 And XBox Game Pass

The Predator Atlas 8 runs Windows 11 Home, giving it access to the full Windows PC gaming ecosystem rather than a custom operating system. The device supports XBox Mode for a console-like interface optimised for handheld use.

Bundled subscriptions include two months of XBox Game Pass Premium and three months of PC Game Pass, providing access to a library of titles at launch. The Windows platform means the device can also run games from Steam, Epic Games Store and other PC launchers.

Acer’s Perspective

Jerry Kao, Chief Operating Officer at Acer, described the design approach behind the handheld.

“With the Predator Atlas 8, we are combining the Predator design philosophy with the power of the new Intel Arc G-Series processors to blur the lines between gaming PC and handheld performance,” Kao remarked.

“From the Predator AeroBlade cooling system to PredatorSense to the adaptive trigger controls, every element of this handheld is curated to give gamers control over their own experiences, wherever they choose to play.”

Where It Sits In The Market

The Predator Atlas 8 enters an increasingly competitive handheld gaming PC market alongside devices from Asus, Lenovo, MSI and Valve. Acer’s differentiation rests on the Intel Arc G-Series platform, the metal fan cooling system and the integration of Predator laptop features such as PredatorSense and AeroBlade into a handheld form factor.

The 80Wh battery and 810-gram weight position it as a device that prioritises session length and performance over minimising size and weight. At 299 x 127 x 29mm at its thinnest point (58mm at its thickest), it is a substantial handheld that reflects the thermal and battery capacity required to run PC-class hardware in a portable package.

Australian pricing remains to be confirmed. The Predator Atlas 8 is expected in the local market from late Q3 to early Q4 2026.
