Surprisingly Useful AI Article Enhancements
Optus is teaming up with key partners to reduce pedestrian collisions in industrial workplaces using advanced camera systems driven by Ai. This collaboration represents a significant step in improving safety protocols across Australia.
The effort brings together Optus, Ericsson, Qualcomm, and Speedshield Technologies, aiming to integrate 5G RedCap technology with Ai-powered cameras. The goal is to make industrial environments safer by detecting pedestrians in real time and slowing or stopping machinery to avoid accidents.
A Push for Safer Workplaces
Optus has deployed Ericsson’s 5G RedCap software solution, which allows Ai-based systems like the AiVA (Artificial Intelligence Vision Assist) Pedestrian Detection System to operate more effectively. The technology relies on 5G connectivity to enhance network functions, including private network support, network slicing, and better battery life—all essential for Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
This system is designed to detect pedestrians using machine vision and Ai in real-time, giving both drivers and machines the opportunity to respond quickly to potential accidents. This approach is seen as crucial in environments such as warehouses and factories, where the risk of collisions is high.
Optus Vice President Access Network Strategy, Planning and Quality, Kent Wu said, “Every employer aims to bring workplace injuries to zero, and the latest 5G technology plays an essential role in achieving that. We’ve demonstrated how 5G RedCap and Ai can slow down or stop machinery when a potential collision with a worker is detected. This is a major advancement for workplace safety.”
Technology in Action
The new technology was demonstrated at Speedshield Technologies’ Melbourne office using Optus’s 5G network. The demonstration involved the integration of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X35 Modem-RF System into the AiVA Pedestrian Detection System. This helped deliver better connectivity, low latency, and longer battery life, resulting in more reliable and efficient performance.
Brendan Dow, CEO of Speedshield Technologies, commented, “Our AiVA system leverages Ai edge processing for real-time analytics, enhancing workplace safety in ways we couldn’t before.”
The Snapdragon X35 Modem-RF System, key to this project, enables the system to offer superior connectivity and lower latency, which is crucial for industrial applications where split-second reactions can prevent accidents.
Industry Collaboration
Ericsson’s role in deploying 5G RedCap technology has been central to the collaboration. Daniel Ode, Head of Global Customer Unit Singtel at Ericsson, said, “Our partnership with Optus on RedCap marks a critical step in their 5G journey. RedCap’s capabilities are part of 5G’s evolution, and they bring new possibilities for devices like wearables, sensors, and cameras.”
The collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies also played a crucial role in making these advancements possible. Gautam Sheoran, Vice President and General Manager, Wireless Broadband and Communication at Qualcomm Technologies, said, “By integrating 5G RedCap with Ai-powered systems like AiVA, we’re making significant progress in industrial safety. With improved connectivity and battery performance from the Snapdragon X35 Modem-RF System, we can better protect workers in high-risk environments.”
