Why You Should Buy An 18-inch Laptop Right Now

We should probably start by setting something straight… a big 18-inch laptop is not really designed to sit on your lap – it’s more of a desktop replacement PC. Some, like MSI’s Stealth A18, would beg to differ (and we’ll cover that below) but these laptops are large for more reasons than just the size of the screen. Indeed, their chassis contain the most-powerful personal computing components on the market and these open the door to, not just top-tier gaming, but business-grade AI applications, too.

There are also reasons you need to consider purchasing one right now. Firstly, MSI’s EoFYs sale is live and won’t last forever. This allows you to save up to $800 on MSI’s 18-inch laptops (with Nvidia RTX 50-Series graphics) plus, you’ll receive a bonus $45 Steam Card. On top of that, many readers will note that their aging desktop PC is running Windows 10 and, with Microsoft ending support for it in October, this is your best opportunity to grab a bargain and upgrade, before everyone panics at the last minute!

If you’re wary about moving from a desktop PC to a laptop, there are other benefits, too: you can lock it away when not in use; you can transport it elsewhere relatively easily; plus the performance and features afforded by a modern, 18-inch laptop dwarf what many desktop PCs could ever dream about.

With all that in mind, MSI teamed-up with SMBtech and High Performance Laptops to tell you which of its models will suit you best.

MSI Titan 18 HX Dragon Edition Norse Myth

MSI has a history of producing some timeless, drop-dead gorgeous, special-edition laptops over the years (check out the Dragon Tiamat Raider and the Ukiyo-e Edition Prestige for instance). Well, it’s done it again with the limited-edition Norse Myth Titan 18 HX Dragon Edition. Just look at it!

Not only is it based-upon MSI’s standard-bearer Titan 18 HX AI laptop (see below), with its Intel Core Ultra 9 285HX processor and Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 GPU, it’s packed with ALL of the latest-and-greatest, mobile-computing technologies. What really makes it special is that its head-turning dragon design has been crafted using mirror-engraving, special polishing and sophisticated anodising techniques to achieve a captivating metal sheen that’s unique in the market. There’s also a ‘World Tree’ embossed dragon ring and medallion embedded in the palm rest. The effect is unlike anything else on the market so, if you want an uncompromising laptop that’s also one of very-few whose appearance can stop people in their tracks, you need to quickly get yourself a Titan 18 HX Dragon Edition Norse Myth, before they sell out. MSI Titan 18 HX AI A2XW

Of course, not everyone will want, or be in time to buy, a Norse Myth Dragon Edition Titan. Fortunately, buyers can still possess the unrivalled and unbridled combination of power and features it affords via MSI’s Titan 18 HX AI A2XW which is identical but for the design. While its fire-breathing sibling might upstage it on the catwalk, not much else will: it’s adorned with multiple RGB flourishes that even includes an RGB track pad! And yet, turning off the lights, transforms it from an instantly identifiable elite gaming PC into a powerful portable computer that can be used for business-grade, AI and LLM applications.

Based around Intel’s Core Ultra 9 285HX CPU and Nvidia’s top-end 24GB GeForce RTX 5090 GPU, it supports up to 96GB of fast DDR5-6400 RAM, has three PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive slots plus another that supports PCIe 5.0. There’s also two of the latest Thunderbolt 5 ports (with PD 3.1 power delivery), a fast SD card reader and Wi-Fi 7.

What’s more, thanks to the combination of MSI’s bespoke cooling hardware (which features a vapour chamber, shared heat-pipes and even a dedicated SSD cooler) and its OverBoost Ultra technology (which can simultaneously direct 95-Watts to the CPU and 175-Watts to the GPU), the components can comfortably run stably and sustainably at maximum power – and beyond, for those who like to overclock. It’s the fastest portable PC on the market.

It’s fantastic to interact with too. That’s thanks to a Cherry MX mechanical keyboard, six speakers (including two Woofers for epic bass) and a phenomenal, 120Hz, 3,840 x 2,400, Mini LED, HDR screen.

MSI says it’s designed for, ‘Total Dominance’ and it’s hard to disagree. It’s an ultimate laptop that’s not just great for gaming and multimedia, but complex AI tasks too. Frankly, we’ve just scratched the surface of what the Titan can do, so find out more, here.

MSI Stealth A18 AI+

While most 18-inch laptops are best suited to being desktop replacements (that can be moved occasionally), MSI’s Stealth range bucks the trend. It’s 19.9mm thick at its slimmest point and it weighs just 2.89KG – that’s less than some 15-inch gaming laptops! It’s solid too, thanks to its magnesium-aluminium alloy chassis that’s stiff, lightweight and robust and it’s got a maximum-size 99.9Wh battery to keep it going on the move.

It’s powerful too, thanks to its AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor and Nvidia 50-Series graphics and its AI prowess opens the door to Small Language Model AI applications. MSI’s vapour-chamber technology keeps everything cool, quiet and stable.

There’s a fast, colour-accurate, 4K Mini-LED display that’s perfect for gaming, multimedia consumption and design-oriented tasks, a full connectivity complement and, somehow, MSI has managed to fit six speakers inside for stunning audio. So, if you want a large, powerful, does-it-all laptop, that can genuinely call itself portable, this is the best choice on the market. Find out more, here.

MSI Raider 18 HX AI A2XW

The Raider range has long been one of our favourites, owing to its superlative combination of design, features, value and performance. It looks amazing with its RGB flourishes – which include the famous Mystic Light Bar – and there’s almost nothing it can’t do. The latest version features Intel’s new AI-capable Arrow Lake processor (the Core Ultra 9 285HX) and Nvidia’s 50-Series graphics. MSI OverBoost technology can supply both with a combined 260-Watts of power while MSI CoolerBoost technology helps to rapidly draw the heat away using a vapour chamber, shared heat pipes (including one for an SSD) plus extra vents, fans and even special, 3D stands.

All the best connectivity options are present, plus, the amazing, Mini-LED, UHD+, HDR screen and six speakers provide amazing multimedia immersion. Any gamer should always have a Raider at the top of their wish list. Find out more, here.

MSI Raider A18 HX A9W

If you want a new Raider but are team AMD, MSI has you covered with the A18 HX A9W. This features all of the above performance enhancements, cutting-edge connectivity and multimedia ergonomics of the Intel model but swaps-in a 16-core, Ryzen 9 9955HX3D processor instead! Find out more, here.

MSI Vector A18 HX A9W

The Vector line is yet another favourite of ours. These powerful Clark-Kent-Superman-style laptops utilise an understated exterior that lets them hide inside an office and mask the top-tier, gaming-laptop interior. The new model features the powerful AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX3D processor, Nvidia’s 50-Series graphics and performance is maximised with MSI’s OverBoost Ultra technology which can deliver 260-Watts of sustained power to both. Everything is kept cool and quiet with Cooler Boost 5 technology that features seven heat pipes, two fans, 3D cooling stands and a dedicated cooler for a fast, PCIe 5.0 SSD.

The rapid, 240Hz, 2,560 x 1,600 screen is great for gaming and it also supports 100 per cent of the tricky DCI-P3 colour gamut which designers will like. It can support multiple external monitors thanks to its HDMI 2.1 and USB 4 ports and there are four, 2-Watt speakers for loud, punchy audio. All connectivity is top-notch and it even comes with a maximum-size, 99.9Wh battery for work on the move. Find out more, here.

Ultimately, few people need a desktop PC nowadays. Regular component upgraders will disagree, but many PC users will benefit from something smaller and mobile which can still blitz all their computing requirements for, potentially, years to come. With MSI’s EoFY sale on for just a few more weeks, this is your last chance to get one at a significant discount before the big ‘Windows 10 End of Life’ scramble begins, so don’t delay: buy one now and you can save up to $800 and receive a bonus $45 Steam Gift card!
