Spoiler Alert: Resident Evil Isn’t The Only Japanese Horror Release Of 2026

Next year is shaping up to be a big one for Japanese horror fans. Resident Evil is returning with its latest installment Resident Evil Requiem. While the release of Resident Evil Village wasn’t that long ago Requiem takes players back to the iconic Raccoon City for the first time in decades. Capcom appears to be moving away from the Winters Era storyline which opens the door for the return of fan-favourite characters like Leon Kennedy. Fans are excited because Requiem promises a nostalgic return to the series’ roots while still offering modern gameplay enhancements.

Interestingly Resident Evil isn’t the only Japanese horror series making waves next year. Corpse Party created by Makoto Kedouin is also coming back with Corpse Party II: Darkness Distortion. For gamers who enjoy a mix of suspense storytelling and survival horror this is one of the more anticipated releases of 2026.

However if you can’t wait that long there’s tonnes of exciting and themed igames to try out your luck with. According to escapistmagazine analysis of Aus online casinos where igaming is a particularly big hit players can expect hits such as pokies crash games as well as live dealer games on traditional options like poker all ready and waiting for you to take them on. If though it’s a good scare you’re after 2026 is going to be the year for you…

A Look At Corpse Party

The Corpse Party series dates back to 1996 when the original game was made using RPG Maker for the PC-9801 a Japanese personal computer. Nearly ten years later the game was adapted for mobile devices and eventually it made its way to PC. Since then the franchise has grown considerably with multiple sequels remakes and spin-offs.

The games typically follow groups of high school students as they navigate supernatural horror and survival scenarios. The series has a cult following among horror enthusiasts. While the art style can feel admittedly a little niche fans who connect with it find gripping stories filled with suspense and scares. Its popularity has led to four manga adaptations and several film projects including two live-action movies released in 2015 and 2016.

With Kedouin returning as the Scenario Designer for Corpse Party II: Darkness Distortion fans have reason to be optimistic. He has contributed to previous installments and his renewed involvement promises to recapture the atmosphere that made the original games so good for so many. The new game is expected to act as a direct sequel to Corpse Party: Blood Drive continuing the storyline for longtime followers.

Development And Delays

The game was first teased in 2020 with a YouTube video from developer Mages titled “10 Years of Corpse Party Repeated Fear.” The video presented a series timeline that concluded with the words “Darkness Distortion.” Officially revealed in 2023 the North American publisher Xseed Games released the first trailer in 2024 alongside preorders. Unfortunately the initial release plans were delayed a situation familiar to gamers who have waited for major titles across the years.

Currently Corpse Party II is expected on PlayStation 4 PlayStation 5 Nintendo Switch and PC. Although a Nintendo Switch 2 version hasn’t been confirmed it’s plausible that it will be included given the previous delays.

What To Expect

Players will follow three students exploring the eerie Amare Est Vivere Hospital. As is typical for the series urban legends become real threats and the characters must work together to survive a vengeful spirit while uncovering the building’s dark secrets. The game remains a visual novel at its core but promises added gameplay depth including the ability to explore in first- and third-person perspectives.

Xseed has outlined six main chapters plus eight additional scenarios and multiple “Wrong Ends.”

  • These gruesome fake endings force players to restart from their last checkpoint

  • They add extra tension and replay value

While no firm release date has been announced 2026 is the expected launch window. Given the delays so far fans are hoping this will finally be the year they can dive into the terrifying world of Corpse Party II: Darkness Distortion.
